Honda‘s latest patent filings reveal that a more powerful version of the Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin may be on its way. While the Africa Twin in its current form is quite popular, its output is quite docile when compared to full-size ADVs like the BMW R 1250 GS. Now, patent drawings filed by the Japanese brand show a potential solution that will offer a bump in performance to the Africa Twin’s 98 bhp, 1,084 cc parallel-twin engine, without getting into significant re-engineering. The patent drawings show a twin screw compressor which helps the parallel-twin engine generate more torque in the lower end.

The turbocharged engine is designed to help improve the Africa Twin’s longer range touring capabilities, while retaining it off-road abilities. The patent drawings show the compressor mounted above the Africa Twin gearbox and would use two injectors for each cylinder. But the patent filings are not quite proof that the Africa Twin will definitely be getting a turbocharger. Filing a patent is also used to trademark new technologies for potential use in future, once the system is refined. And it could be used in any other model as well.

So far, Honda is anticipated to actually introduce a smaller version of the Africa Twin, to be called the Honda Transalp, and this model will likely use a 850 cc engine and will be positioned as a more lightweight off-roader to take on rivals like the Yamaha Tenere 700. More details will be known later in the year, possibly closer to the EICMA 2021 show, when Honda’s new models are announced.
